fishcake is excited to be working with TRADES A.i.R to host michael wang in conversation on february 26, 2018. the artist talk will take place from 6-8pm at our main location in kaka'ako and is free to the public. michael will report on the hawai'i based fieldwork he has been completing with TRADES A.i.R. and will discuss the intersections of art, conservation science, and cultural preservation with two esteemed experts, dr. sam gon + dr. helen turner.
during his residency with TRADES A.i.R, wang has been continuing his "extinct in the wild" project. focussing on fauna and flora species that are no longer found in nature but that continue to persist through human intervention and care, wangs work represents the "kind of passage from nature into culture" that these species have become. "extinct in the wild" has been shown at the fondazione prada in milan and at the xx bienal de arquitectura y urbanismo in valparaiso chile.
while in hawai'i michael has hoped to document the last location where these species were observed in the wild as well as their preservation in captivity or cultivation. michael's work is expected to foster conversations between local artists, scientists, conservationists and cultural practitioners, just like this artist talk.
