fishcake presents Algorithmic Earth, opening on Thursday, May 23, 2019, showcasing new work by Honolulu-based ceramicists Christopher Edwards and Rae Douglass. some of their sculptures tower dangerously, relying on the strength of the sum of their parts to stabilize the assemblage.
Christopher Edwards makes biomorphic sculptures that blur the line between the natural and the unnatural; between what is grown and what is made. Inspired by the processes of the natural world and the visual language of human technology, his involve the juxtaposition and blending of disparate sources to create objects with their own logic of form. His work is in collections of the Honolulu Museum of Art, the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, the Luciano Benetton Collection, as well as national and international private collectors. He started working in ceramics in 2012 and has a background in graphic design.
Rae Douglass is a architect who has created a broad range of work that is noteworthy for its deep connection to client and context. His work has won awards from the American Institute of Architects. Douglass is also an inventor with multiple patents in the lighting and toy industries with current inventions licensed by Ravensburger. Douglass founded a lighting company and has created permanent sculptural installations based on his inventions at various schools and universities. Rae has taught Architecture at the University of Hawaii and has worked with the Hawaii Department of Education to initiate the Ka Hei Program as its Program Manager to design a modular system of building components to replace their inventory of portable classrooms.
The show will be on exhibit at fishcake from Thursday, May 23, 2019 to August 8, 2019. Parking is available in the adjacent parking lot at 331 Kamani St. Works will be available for purchase.
