Maneki Neko Show

For fishcake’s last art show of the year, fifteen artists work around the theme of the “good luck cat”, Maneki Neko, and create new incarnations of the paw waving feline with astoundingly varied, fun, and radical results in an all media show. Artists are Tia Castro, Yvonne Cheng, May Izumi, Wendy Kim Messier, John Koga, Johanette Rowley, Lawrence Seward, Esther Shimazu, Bud Spindt, Jason Teraoka, Lonny Tomono, Mike Watanabe, Shannon Webb, Suzanne Wolfe, Maile Yawata.

The Maneki Neko, which translates literally to “the beckoning cat” in Japanese, is commonly an upright calico figurine displayed at the entrance of stores and businesses.  Though its origins are in Japan, the maneki neko is prominently by multi-ethnic owned stores throughout the Hawaiian Islands.
