Fishcake presents HI > NY > HI reflection / rearticulation by a ring of eight Hawaii born artists that share a journeyed experience to New York City around the neo-conceptual era of the 80’s, on view January 21 to April 10, 2021.
In the 80’s - 90’s a circle of young emerging artists ventured from their homes in Hawaii to the Big Apple, aka New York City. The scene at the time was the height of neo-conceptualism, avant garde and pop street art. Big names that came from those times were Jean-Michel Basquiat, Jeff Koons, Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, etc. This circle of Hawaii artists experienced a unique and special time together in American history. Now, forty years later, many have trickled back to Hawaii, bringing with them their own flavor. This show will be the third iteration of HI/NY/HI shows since their exhibitions in the early 90’s at BOOM Gallery downtown and in the mid-90’s at KCC’s Gallery.
Todd Akita left Hawaii for New York in 1990 to study fine arts at Parsons School of Design in New York. In the mid 90s he turned his attention to computer graphics as both an artistic medium for personal expression and as a way of making a living as an animation professional.
Collaborative projects (with artist Alyson Shotz, and musicians Simon Fisher Turner and Nasheet Waits) have been exhibited at Espace Louis Vuitton Tokyo, Indiana Museum of Art, and the Wellin Museum at Hamilton College.
Professional works have been included in the MOMA's permanent collection (AICP Award Show) and in the Cooper Hewitt 2006 Design Triennial.
