joe bright, born and raised in hawai'i, studied painting and calligraphy in cooper union, new york, and then went on to teach alongside his instructor don kunz. returning back to hawai'i, he taught painting and had showings of his works in hawai'i and new york exhibitions. this piece is one of four in a series inspired by beethoven's 9th symphony, written in the moments beethoven was losing his hearing. joe bright perceives this to be beethoven's autobiography in four parts: beginnings; progress; setbacks; transcendence. motif no.4 is paintings on paper serving as an exploration into the themes and colors in the similar progress of beethoven's transcendence.
