Fishcake presents HI > NY > HI reflection / rearticulation by a ring of eight Hawaii born artists that share a journeyed experience to New York City around the neo-conceptual era of the ’80s, on view January 21 to April 10, 2021.
In the 80s-90s, a circle of young emerging artists ventured from their homes in Hawaii to the Big Apple, aka New York City. The scene at the time was the height of neo-conceptualism, avant-garde, and pop street art. Big names that came from those times were Jean-Michel Basquiat, Jeff Koons, Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, etc. This circle of Hawaii artists experienced a unique and special time together in American history. Now, forty years later, many have trickled back to Hawaii, bringing with them their own flavor. This show will be the third iteration of HI/NY/HI shows since their exhibitions in the early ’90s at BOOM Gallery downtown and in the mid-’90s at KCC’s Gallery.
These are part of a group of "Art on the Road" drawings. They were done in a small hotel studio while staying in Hawaii recently. Limiting the materials and palette was a way to both focus the content of the work as well as facilitate portability. By pairing down to essentials, I wanted to create an intimate experience of transient impressions with a minimum of distractions.
