Fishcake presents HI > NY > HI reflection / rearticulation by a ring of eight Hawaii born artists that share a journeyed experience to New York City around the neo-conceptual era of the ’80s, on view January 21 to April 10, 2021.

In the 80s-90s, a circle of young emerging artists ventured from their homes in Hawaii to the Big Apple, aka New York City. The scene at the time was the height of neo-conceptualism, avant-garde, and pop street art. Big names that came from those times were Jean-Michel Basquiat, Jeff Koons, Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, etc. This circle of Hawaii artists experienced a unique and special time together in American history. Now, forty years later, many have trickled back to Hawaii, bringing with them their own flavor. This show will be the third iteration of HI/NY/HI shows since their exhibitions in the early ’90s at BOOM Gallery downtown and in the mid-’90s at KCC’s Gallery.

Russell Sunabe, born on the youngest island of Hawaii, often refers back to this home in his painting through his subjects and symbols. This connection to the land, diversity of local people brings us closer to Sunabe. He appears to be striving daily through his strict painting regime to get closer and closer to the “ontological difference,” the difference between the experience of reality as a whole and the experience of reality as a collection of parts. Sunabe’s work speaks clearly to his own defiant soul searching self, as well as to the many art students he inspires at Kapiolani Community College.
