1 day watch party With Erika Pascual All levels welcome Ages 18+ Settle in for a cozy, inspiring evening of art and Studio Ghibli! We'll be screening Only Yesterday, a heartfelt story of memory and self-discovery. Bring your sketchbook, tablet, or favorite materials—artists are encouraged to draw during the movie. Some art supplies will be provided, along with refreshments. All skill levels welcome! About the film: Only Yesterday (1991) Directed by Isao Takahata A quiet masterpiece from Studio Ghibli, Only Yesterday follows Taeko, a 27-year-old office worker who leaves Tokyo for the countryside. As she travels through rural Japan, memories of her 10-year-old self resurface. These reflections lead her to question the life she’s built. With gentle pacing and emotional depth, the film is a meditation on memory, personal growth, and the passage of time. It stands out for its mature themes, realistic characters, and rare portrayal of womanhood in animation. Though released in Japan in 1991, the film didn’t reach Western audiences with an English-language dub until 2016. Disney, then Ghibli’s distributor, delayed it due to discomfort with a subplot about menstruation—rarely depicted in animation. Upon its U.S. release, it was hailed as a long-overdue gem.
