Presented here are artists exploring themes of place, senses of belonging, and hybrid experiences of identity in Hawaii’s nuanced context. The works observe and probe at what is “local” with cultural references in a wry manner - often landing on under-recognized details of Hawaii ephemera. There is a reverence paid to everyday objects that would otherwise be overlooked, nostalgic references to families that are distinctly touched with an ode to Asian immigrant resourcefulness - the repurposing a Daiei container for a plumeria tree by Mark Yoshizumi or the locals slippers piled by the front door by Max Cleary. There is seduction in our tropical surroundings, as in the work of Amber Khan, and also a push back at its fetishized display. The aloha print fabric that frames…
