The Maneki Neko, which translates literally to “the beckoning cat” in Japanese. The lucky cat is a famous figure and symbol in Japan and is commonly an upright bobtail calico figurine displayed at the entrance of stores and businesses. It will bring you good luck. Maneki Neko raising the right paw beckons prosperity, while the left paw beckons people and customers. Though its origins are in Japan, the maneki neko is widely recognized by multi-ethnic, locally owned mom and pop shops across the Hawaiian islands. Culturally significant and visually iconic, we celebrate the feline’s hard work in bringing us good fortune and new opportunities.
Fishcake is bringing back the popular “Maneki Neko Show” for its 3rd visit, with a new collective of fine artists. On view starting November 17, 2022 till January 14, 2023. Opening reception happening Thursday, December 1, 2022. This year, fourteen artists work around the theme of the “good luck cat”, Maneki Neko, and create various incarnations of the paw waving feline with astoundingly varied, fun, and radical results in an all media show. Come meet the wild and fun lucky cat gang produced by cat creators Kirsten Simonsen, Daven Hee, Johanette Rowley, Esther SHimazu, Mariko Merritt, Maile Yawata, Holly Breaffett, Megumi Harada, Suzanne Wolfe, and Nygell Halvorson.
