Lonny Tomono was born in 1954 in Hilo (Big Island) and lives in Keaau (Big Island). He studied at the University of Hawai‘i in Hilo, the San Francisco Art Institute (California), San José State University (California) and an apprenticeship with temple builder Seiichiro Kitamura, Kyoto (Japan). Tomono’s artwork practice revolves around having a conversation with oneself, in which through argument and trial, one tries to express the inexplicable. He can’t quite tell what’s going to happen when he starts, but then things fall into place. Certain things affect him and when the work is in the finishing state, he realizes it’s about himself. Tomono has exhibited at Eclectica Inc. at the Koa Art Gallery (Honolulu) in 2017 amongst other exhibitions in Hawai‘i.
