Workshop Description
1 day workshop With Kilikina All levels welcome Ages 18+ Sumi-e (ink painting) is considered one of the traditional Arts of Japan. Historians write that ink wash painting began in China in 600 AD then was introduced to Japan in the 14th Century by Zen Bhuddist monks. Sumi-e is regarded as a meditative practice. Minimal brush strokes are used to express the essence or spirit of the subject. In this class, students will be introduced to 4 basic brush strokes. We will practice making a traditional circular stroke called Enso, which represents enlightenment, freedom and the state of "no-mind". We will also practice making bamboo, flowers, and a bird. Unlike other types of painting, there is no over painting, each simple stroke is only done once. All materials provided.
